Mile 1574 – Crystal Mountain To Mile 1584 – Mark Noepel Shelter
Part of the rationale for our starting location is to allow time before New Hampshire to increase our strength and endurance before we tackle the whites. Today we got another test of our progress with Mt. Greylock – our tallest peak yet. We’ve both been a bit intimidated this week knowing it was coming.

Walking in steady rain
The trail took us through the streets of a small town before starting the climb and within a half mile of a Dunkin Donuts. We could not resist a quick stop for second breakfast.

Breakfast, again
We walked up the mountain most of the day in the cold rain and fog.
There was an option of camping just below the peak or continuing another five miles to camp on the other side. We chose the earlier stop, happy to be out of the rain before dark.

Camped in the clouds

Warm and cozy on a cold, wet night
You know you have become hobbits hiking the Appalachian Trail in the NE when you will walk 1/2 mile to eat Dunkin’ Donuts for second breakfast.
