Mile 1215 – Jim and Molly Denton Memorial Shelter To Mile 1234 – Gravel Springs Hut
We woke up to dense fog and walked in clouds most of the day. Entering the national park was a definite highlight. There is a kiosk along the trail near the park boundary where we self-registered for our back country permit and then continued into the park. The trail here parallels the Skyline Drive and crosses it frequently, but there was not much traffic today. It felt like we had the park to ourselves.

Foggy welcome to the park
The fog started to dissipate in the afternoon and we could start to catch glimpses of the valley below. As our elevation continues to increase, we can see farther into the distance. The mountain ridges seem to go on forever until they eventually blend into the clouds making it difficult to tell where the mountains end and the sky begins.
