Day 113. Slow Going

Mile 1276 – Stealth To Mile 1294 – Pinefield Hut

Skyline Drive remains closed and we are starting to get an idea of just how bad this ice storm was at higher elevations. As we move south the extent of the damage increases. Today we encountered almost constant blocked or partially blocked trail. There were many sections that were not passable so we had to bushwack around the fallen trees and limbs. We made enough progress that we should be able to get to Waynesboro the day after tomorrow, but it was extremely difficult – possibly the most difficult day on trail so far.

At every crossing of Skyline Drive we can see numerous downed trees blocking the road in both directions. It will probably be some time before the road is open again. We are starting to wonder how for down the trail this will continue.
