Day 116. Central Virginia

Mile 1328 – Waynesboro To Mile 1333 – Paul Wolfe Shelter

After a fun and relaxing stay last night in Waynesboro we returned back to the trail to continue south. Any hope that we had of improvement past SNP was immediately dashed when we saw the trailhead. There were a bunch of day hikers starting out at the same time as we were and they all gave up and turned around within the first mile. We continued to fight all afternoon and managed five miles before it started to get dark.

A while ago I wrote that the Mahoosuc Notch was the most difficult section of the trail. I would never have believed back then that there would be large sections in central Virginia that would be slower.

After dinner I looked at the ATC trail updates web page and saw that they have started compiling status reports related to the damage from the ice storm. There is not much information to work with, but it appears the damage extends at least another 100 miles south from our location and that it could be weeks before cleanup efforts even begin in some areas. Five miles per day is not a recipe for a successful thru hike. We may need a new plan.

This is what we do now
