Mile 1709 – Beartree Gap To Mile 1721 – Damascus
Damascus is the epitome of a trail town. The AT runs right down Main Street and several other popular trails also intersect here. It is also the location of the huge Trail Days festival each spring, drawing thousands of hikers to town. We had a relatively short, easy hike this morning and arrived early in the afternoon with plenty of time to resupply and explore the town.
Our plan is to hike a full day tomorrow and again use a shuttle to return to town tomorrow night because of the low temperature predicted at higher elevations. Folks around here keep talking about how unusual it is to have this kind of weather so early, but it is starting to seem like are not going to get out of it any time soon. We’re just finding ways to continue hiking despite it.
