Day 38. Diversity

Mile 662 – Pistol Hill Rd. To Mile 683 – Stealth

We decided to actually leave Magic Camp today. We got up after sunrise and packed our stuff. Breakfast was pancakes and bacon; they had enough for all 8 hikers and bikers there. We were the first to leave, reluctantly, at around 9 am. Verde and Bluebird, two other hikers from the post office, followed soon after. The four of us met again for lunch at a shaded creek in a grove of aspens. Bluebird’s dad had worked on the AZT, building the original trail and gates; Jim from magic camp has a plaque at one of the gates that he funded as well.

This trail passes through hundreds of little ecosystems, sometimes a dozen times a day. From saguaro land to flat desert to creek and Aspen trees in just a few miles. When I signed up for this trip, I knew some of it was desert. I was expecting flat, hot, cracked ground and cacti. Not brushy wilderness with trickling streams, cows, and snow. I’m pleasantly surprised.
