Day 5 – Mather Pass

Mile 54.9 to Mile 71.3

The Kings Canyon National Park, which we have been hiking in for several days, has in it as its main attraction: The Kings Canyon. Naturally.

This canyon was carved out during ice ages over the last 2.5 million years, leaving a U-shaped basin overshadowed by dramatic granite peaks. Walking through the park, we saw a few of these striking valleys, including LeConte valley pictured below.

These glaciers left other evidence of their presence. Striations, for instance, are long scrape marks in the granite. Random boulders scattered around, called erratics, were deposited millions of years ago, sometimes stacked in peculiar formations.

There are actually a few surviving glaciers in Kings Canyon National Park, although they are dwindling yearly.
