Day 15. Cows

Mile 261.9 – 283.4

We had a fairly easy day today. Most of the hiking was through fields of grazing cows, up and over small hills and through valleys. The heat of the sun did make it feel harder though.
We also had a new experience today: the trail was open to hikers, bikers, horse packers, and motorcycles. Maybe a dozen motorcycles passed us, leaving a cloud of dust and the smell of gas behind them. I’m very surprised the cows didn’t mind it.

Given the existence of the cows, we chose to skip a few suspicious ponds and extend our water carry. We ate dinner early for the first time, using water from a nice creek so we didn’t have to carry as much up the mountain for camping.
