Day 56. The Bigelows

Mile 2008 – Horns Pond To Mile 2019 – Carabassett Valley

The storm passed by overnight and we started the day with steady improving weather. We had several peaks to cross in the Bigelows and had planned to meet some friends at a road crossing on the other side.

Morning in Maine

Beautiful, cold ascent

Fun climb in the wind

The Bigelows were absolutely amazing. It was windy and cold at the higher elevations, but the clear sunny views made it worthwhile. The climbs were long, but the trail was not difficult and we did not have a long day planned, so we took our time and enjoyed the hike immensely.

Amazing views

House size boulders

Samantha and John are wonderful friends and have been part of Rocket’s life for as long as she can remember. They happened to be in the area this weekend planning and event and doing some hiking. When they realized we might be coming through the area at the same time, they asked if we might be able to meet up. I’m so glad it worked out!

Although we has planned to meet them at a trailhead in the evening, we were surprised to actually pass them on the trail just after lunch! Part of their hike took them on the AT southbound, just as we were descending Avery.

After we each completed our respective hikes for the day we spent the evening together and had fun catching up over dinner. They were so gracious to give us a place to stay for the night in town and drive us around to take care of all our town errands. So amazing!

Fun day with friends
