Mile 2002 – Derrick Knob Shelter To Mile 2025 – Fontana Dam
Today we wrapped up the southern portion of the park with a long downhill back to Fontana Dam. The day started in deep snow, but as we descended the snow level gradually decreased until we were walking on dry ground again for the last few hours.
Brenda was there to meet us at the end of the day and while she was waiting another hiker that we know (Food Truck) walked by. He waited for us all to arrive so he could ride into town with us. We had not seen him since Standing Bear before Christmas, but we knew he was just ahead of us because we have been following his footsteps for the last two days. We knew it was him because the footprints we were following in the snow were snowshoes, and he is the only SOBO ahead of us that we know is carrying those. It was so nice having someone ahead breaking the trail for a change!
Tomorrow we’ll head back to Newfound Gap to start the northern portion of the park. It is a two day section that we plan to cover walking northbound to make things slightly easier logistically.
