Day 163. Central Virginia Redux

Mile 1482 – VA Rt. 311 To Mile 1478 – Campbell Shelter

After a much needed rest yesterday, we were ready to get back out there. Back in November we skipped a section in Virginia after an ice storm caused a tremendous amount of damage to the trail in this area. Because our goal is to hike the whole trail, we are now returning to complete this section.

For logistical reasons we are hiking this section northbound, basically from McAfee Knob up to Humpback Rock, just south of Waynesboro (about 141 miles total).

We stayed in town as long as possible to give our sore legs some more time to rest and then hiked just a few miles. It was far enough, however, to reach McAfee Knob, which was amazing at sunset. (Spoiler: it is much less scary than this angle makes it look)

Being on our own again was a little strange and reminded us of what it felt like for the first few days of our hike. We spent most of the day reminiscing about that time.
