Mile 525 – Kearny
Time for a rest day!

According to the article about themselves on display at the library, they embrace their reputation as the friendliest town on the AZT. We agree!

It took only one phone call and we had a ride into town within five minutes. There is one hotel in town which is a combination saloon/inn. As soon as we walked in the door a guy at the bar introduced himself and offered to pay half our room rate. The guy who runs the IGA gave us free coffee and doughnuts this morning. As we walk through town with our gear, we see lots of smiles and waves. The pizza place has a hiker box right beside the salad bar, and offered to fill our water bottles. Even the hardware store makes sure to stock plenty of the right kind of fuel canisters. This is the definition of a hiker-friendly trail town. (Maybe even a bit too much)

Sounds like a good place to take a day rest.
