Day 1 – Waterton Canyon

Mile 0 – 8.6

We’ve been looking forward to spending some quality time in the Rockies. This was our backup plan last summer for the JMT and it has been a goal of Rocket’s for a long time.

Rocket starts the fall semester of their senior year in high school in a few weeks. It turns out that this is a busy time in life for a teenager. School, college applications, activities, and friends don’t leave much room for long distance hiking! But Rocket wanted to fit this in to the time available, so we are going to try. We won’t exactly need to rush, but we will need to be efficient.

The trail starts out with a long walk along a dusty dirt road for several miles. Not the most amazing start, but we are excited to be out here. Also, the bighorn sheep are fun.
